Message from Provost Cyril Clarke and COO Amy Sebring: Monitoring Federal Government Shutdown
October 1, 2025
Virginia Tech is closely monitoring the impacts of the federal government shutdown that went into effect at midnight on Sept. 30. While we await further details regarding the possible implications of the shutdown, university employees should continue with normal instructional, research, and operations activities until further notice.
Though critically important to our institutional priorities, federal funding is just one of many resources that comprise the overall university budget. Virginia Tech is well-positioned to manage disruptions of a temporary federal government shutdown and remains focused on our goals, priorities, and responsibilities as a land grant institution. We encourage you to stay connected to and share feedback with your college and unit leadership, who will be able to provide program and unit level information on these and related matters.
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) advises researchers to continue to work on their grants and contracts unless the sponsoring agency directs all work to stop or the federal contract/grant officer issues a stop work order. Faculty should keep in close touch with their OSP post-award grants/contracts administrator and check the Research and Innovation webpage for up-to-date information and guidance related to research activity during the shutdown. The webpage includes frequently asked questions and contacts for pre-award and post-award questions.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the progress, success, and advancement of Virginia Tech. We will continue to provide you with updates and guidance as new information becomes available.
